Thursday, March 20th, 7PM: Ballard Street Poetry Journal Release Party. Please join us at 1 Ekman Street, Worcester, 7PM for the release of our winter 2008 issue. Open mic including poets published in the issue, followed by our feature, Gary Hoare. Free and open to the public. Refreshments served $6 a copy, $10 per subscription.

Thursday, April 10th, 8PM: Ted Blackler reads and performs his work at The Spot, Hotel Vernon, Kelly Square, Worcester, MA. Hosted by Bobby Gibbs.

Saturday, April 26th, 7PM:Bob Gill reads his poetry at Barnes & Noble, Lincoln Plaza, Worcester, MA. Hosted by Carle Johnson.

Sunday, April 6th, 3-5PM
Michael Fisher: The Poem Can't Say a Thing If It doesn't Sing: A discussion of Prosody and Tone in Poetry.


In this workshop we will discuss the effect of prosody on a poems meaning and tone. We will be looking at examples from Paul Celen, Anne Waldman and Charles Bukowski. By exploring these examples, it is my hope that we can grow as poets and expand are "poet toolbox." Attendees should plan on bringing about ten copies of a poem that they wish to revise.

About the poet: Michael Fisher lives in Worcester, MA. He holds a BA in English from Anna Maria College and an MFA in Poetry from New England College. His work has appeared in several magazine, including "The Worcester Review," "Common Ground Review," and "5 AM."

John Gaumond: People Powered Poetry

The purpose of this workshop is to have participants write, share and respond, as they work though an activity to help create a new poem.

About the poet: John Gaumond is a poet and photographer from Worcester, Mass. His poetry has been published in Sahara, The Leaflet, Worcester Magazine, The Issue, The Longfellow Society, The Lancaster Times, Vox Poetica, The Connecticut River Review, and Poets in the Galleries: a collaborative project of the Worcester Art Museum and The Worcester County Poetry Association.

Sunday, May 4th, 3-5PM
Emily Ferrara: Word Alchemy

This workshop is designed to tap into the playful and transformational power of language, in order to generate raw material for new poems. We will draw from both traditional and experiential approaches to writing, including the Amherst Writers and Artists (AWA) method, and the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics.

About the Poet: Emily Ferrara is author of the award-winning poetry collection The Alchemy of Grief, published by Bordighera Press in 2007. She is on the faculty of UMass Medical School, where she has taught creative writing to medical students since 1997.


Sunday, May 18th, 3-5PM
Heather J. Macpherson: The Art of Imitation

Today we’ll read and examine the works of James Tate, Elizabeth Bishop, William Carlos Williams and a few others and practice the fine poetic art of imitating others and those we emulate. Please bring a poem of your liking written by someone you admire to share with the group.

About the Poet: Heather J. Macpherson is the publisher and editor of Ballard Street Poetry Journal. Her poetry has appeared in Third Wednesday, Wicked Alice, Real Women Press, Nerve Cowboy, Poets in the Galleries (anthology), among others. She also has work forthcoming in Pearl.
